An Entrepreneur's Approach to Licensing: A Means to an End
Often the path to entrepreneurial success includes the following steps: 1)develop a product or service from scratch 2) market your product to the people who will use it 3) sell your product to the users and 4) make a lot of profit from the sales. Although this approach is a good one, an
alternative is to use strategic partners and licensing as a way of acquiring your product or technology and/or as a way of getting your technology to market. The upside of partnering especially for a startup is that you can leverage the resources and market reach of a more established and larger company. The downside is some loss of control and ultimately a smaller slice of the pie. The idea is to create a much bigger pie, much more quickly with the right partners. The presenter will discuss his approach to licensing in several technology ventures that he has been involved with over hhe last ten years. Several case studies including both successes and failures will be discussed during this session. Although some of the legal issues will be discussed, the objective will be to focus more on the practical aspects of partnering using licensing as a means to an end.
Presenter: Dr Peter Millett is a serial entrepreneur who has co-founded two
technology businesses and an engineering consulting company over the last 10 years. His latest company formed a joint venture with another startup which was subsequently sold to GE. Prior to this, he was a Research Manager for the Electric Power Research Institute, a non-profit organization that conducts research and development on technology, operations and the
environment for the global electric power sector. He has published over seventy technical papers and holds six patents for his work. Peter has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut and a Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurial Management from Boston University. He is currently a Senior Manager at Exponent, a scientific and engineering consulting firm and lives in the mid-coast region of Maine. Peter is also a member of the Maine Angels.
The Maine Center for Enterprise Development provides an experiential learning environment to start-ups and early stage entrepreneurs for the creation and growth of quality companies through incubation, entrepreneurial development and education.
